CHAPTER 18

Loria flicked her gaze to Ulrick’s, moistening her unexpectedly parched lips. She wanted to kiss him. Almost couldn’t resist. For an instant, she leaned closer, before catching herself. Where had such a crazy urge come from?

She blinked back her confusion and nodded, keeping just a little more space between them as they walked past a gas fireplace serving double duty, one side facing the spacious kitchen’s sizeable dining nook, and the other radiating its cheery warmth into the living area.

A lone chair in charcoal was drawn up beside it with an open book laying on the hearth. She doubted very much he had placed it for aesthetics, but she refrained from asking what he was reading.

Somehow seeing that made her feel more comfortable, helping her visualize him relaxed, not so intense. Suddenly understanding he must also have that side of himself, she felt her back muscles loosening, even as they stopped in the doorway of his bedroom.

Here, the windows were covered in simple green panels of heavy material. The cherry wood continued, offset by a carpet of reds and greens. Lovely and of exceptional quality and taste. But what made her gasp aloud was the bed. Or rather, what was above it.

The mattress, covered in a slate blue spread with black pillows, sat atop a gleaming mahogany platform that branched off at the head to the left and right into steps, converging at the top into a floating library, complete with big leather chair.

A library. Over the bed!

“That is...awesome!”

She walked into the room and onto the platform, turning back to find him smiling at her. “I’m sorry. Do you mind?”

“Go ahead.”

He came in after her, watching as she climbed and stood in the six by twelve-foot space. The built-in shelves appeared to be mahogany as well, buffed to the same high gloss of the platform and steps. The scent of books and polish competed with the heady aroma of fine leather from bound books and the handsome studded chair that stood beside a standing lamp with tea-stained shade. Such a cozy space.

“This is absolutely...magnificent!” she told him, looking over the balcony rail to where he stood at the foot of the bed.

“I’m glad you like it. It was one of the first changes I made when I bought the place. I love to read.”

The statement should have had a more contented ring to it. It would have, if the apartment was hers and she’d built this. But there was that somber tone again. She tore her eyes from the collection of literature and looked back down at him.

His chest puffed a little, then deflated with what she assumed was a sigh, as he sat on the edge of the bed.

“Are you all right?” she asked him.

When he didn’t reply, she slowly descended the steps and came to stand beside him. His gaze flicked to her, then settled on the floor. She resisted putting her hand on his shoulder as her senses went on alert. She was alone with him
