Chapter 12: Strumming Basics

You can strum with one finger, or all five, or do anything in-between. You can strum up or down. There are many common strumming patterns, and you can always invent your own.

Arrows are sometimes used to explain strumming patterns. An arrow pointing “up” means you strum upward, from the A-string to the G-string. An arrow pointing “down” means you strum downward, from the G-string to the A-string.

For example:

means that the measure is played with four downward strums. So if the measure is in 4/4 time, you would count “1-2-3-4” as you play. When you count “1,” you strum downward once. When you count “2,” you strum downward a second time, and so on.
