Chapter Seventeen

Nick

Warm blood pumped around Nick’s body, holding him in a contented stupor. As he came to, his arm felt cold. Rooting around in the darkness, he searched for his duvet. But hang on. This wasn’t his sofa. It was Cha’s. His hand groped around behind him and found another body. The skyflower fragrance was unmistakable. She was spooning him and, jeez, it felt so good.

His drowsy brain did its best to work out how they got into this position. He vaguely remembered nodding off just after Rear Window finished but after that it was hazy. With Sara living at the house, he hadn’t slept properly for ages. And it wasn’t just because he was stuck on the sofa. The whole setup had him on edge. His phone was in the car and he could guarantee there would be about fifty messages and missed calls. And while he got it to a certain extent – it was human nature to worry – it irritated him to think he was answerable to her. Why should he tell her where he was or when he’d be back? It wasn’t strictly speaking any of her business.

He’d had his first appointment with the divorce lawyer in town and the wheels were in motion but even that had made no difference to Sara. She still wouldn’t leave despite his offers to help her find a shelter or go to the police with her.

He closed his eyes and relaxed into Cha’s warm embrace. None of that mattered right now. He wasn’t going to think about anything; he was just going to exist in this warm, dreamy place for another hour or two and face the consequences later.
