GREAT WEDDING OUTFITS—ONES that unabashedly reflect the personalities of the people wearing them—are hands down one of my favorite things. All the fantastic possibilities, from ball gowns, to long lace frocks, to feather capes, to sequined pantsuits, to impeccably tailored suits, are among the reasons I just can’t quit weddings.

These outfits are not about spending a lot of money (at least not if you don’t want to), or about pretending to be someone you’re not. Instead they’re just about being—for one kind of magical day—the shiniest version of yourself.

Of course, finding that awesome little number can be a tad tricky. And navigating the (often choppy) waters of the wedding and bridesmaid dress industry can take something of a primer on who, what, where, when, and OMG WHY?

To get you to your own sequined gown, sleek pantsuit, or dapper tux while keeping you sane and solvent, I’m going to break down why and how the wedding clothing industry works the way it does. This will give you the basic information you need to navigate it (or avoid it all together). I’ll skip what seem like the staples of the literature—definitions of different wedding dress necklines and descriptions of all the beautiful and expensive fabrics that exist in the world. I figure you’ll know what you like (and can afford) when you see it. The trick is to get you into the right store, the right online boutique, or just the right frame of mind.
