■ MOVING TOWARDS ENLIGHTENED LEGISLATION

Barry Spurr

Barry Spurr is a member of the Animal Justice Party and Professor of Poetry and Poetics at The University of Sydney… ■

Everyone concerned about animal welfare is increasingly frustrated about the inability, slowness, reluctance or downright refusal of government, at all levels – local, state and federal – to enact humane and enlightened legislation, and enforce it, in the interest of the protection of all animals from cruelty and exploitation. Even when the overwhelming opinion of the people is clearly opposed to an issue of animal welfare, such as the use of wild animals in circuses, government refuses to act or produces lamely compromised legislation, which fails to address the situation effectively. Constant lobbying of government by animal welfare groups has achieved little or nothing in a range of areas that urgently need attention, such as pet farms, the live export industry, jumps racing and factory farming, all of which, again, would be opposed by most electors.

I believe the only way forward is for there to be a political party in Parliament to represent the interests of animals, whose voices are simply not being heard or heeded by the mainstream parties.
