Although sources of funding are more numerous, so are those competing for their funds. With more funding available, it is easier to start new businesses and other types of organizations. Nevertheless, most businesses do not survive their first year, and the average life of those that do is less than 15 years. It is not always the case that the ability to sustain an enterprise has increased in the current environment.

The increasing ability to change jobs is confronted with obstructions to doing so. For instance, such a change may involve a loss of health benefits or pension funds. Employees have found ways to tie down “good” employees (for example, stock options). The educational system does not stimulate development of the courage that makes criticism of employers common and the willingness to start over in a new work environment. In general, the educational system produces security seekers, not change promoters.
