CHAPTER EIGHT

IT WAS A GOOD half hour or so before Gregor looked up from his conversation and noticed that Faye was no longer at the table. His eyes darted around the bar, and he wondered if she had gone to the loo, but part of him started to worry. Emily had been talking nonstop and he had been too polite to excuse himself from their catch-up session, or more like her catch-up. Being overly polite was one of his flaws. It was in his British blood, but he just didn’t know how to be rude, especially to a woman, even if she had been terrible to him.

Emily was telling him how lonely she’d been since they had broken up, and though part of Gregor still felt that familiar tug toward her, that spark of physical attraction, he quickly realized that it was simply a habit. His life was actually going great. But at the moment, he couldn’t find the one woman who had helped him turn things around.

“Tom, have you seen Faye?” he yelled across the table.

Tom, who was completely drunk by now, nodded his head slowly. “I think she went outside,” he said in a slurred voice.

Gregor stood up from the table and Emily quickly stood up, too.

“I’m so sorry, my friend’s gone missing. Will you excuse me?” he said.

“I’ll help you find her!” Emily volunteered.

Gregor wished she wouldn’t, but he didn’t know what to say.

“What’s she look like?”

Gregor thought about Faye for a moment, and the first thing he saw were her dark brown eyes. He needed so desperately to see them right now. But maybe she was right outside, and he was overreacting.

“Blonde, short, pretty,” he said, trying to sound perfunctory.

“Ah, just your type,” Emily said playfully, giving him a little punch on the arm that he thought was too flirty.

Gregor pushed his way out toward the door and finally made his way outside.

“She’s gone,” he said with certainty. Gregor pulled out his new cell phone and hit redial on Faye’s number. The phone rang and rang but there was no answer.

“Everything alright?”

Gregor felt Emily snake her arms around him from behind. He turned toward her and gently removed her hands from his body.

“No. I need to go find my friend.” Gregor knew she might go back to the cottage. But there was one place he felt certain she was headed. Pulling out his keys, he jumped into the truck, but when he tried to start the engine, it wouldn’t turn over. “Fuck!” he yelled, hitting the steering wheel with both hands. Jumping down from the cab, he paced in front of his broken-down beast, thinking of what to do next.

“I can give you a lift,” Emily said, dangling her own set of keys in the air like bait. Gregor hesitated. He knew that Faye seeing him with Emily had probably upset her. He thought of his friends back inside the pub, all likely too plastered to drive. He weighed the pros and cons of accepting anything from Emily.
