CHAPTER TWENTY˜TWO

All through the night, Alta listened to the grunts of the Albertosaur family in the mudflat beyond her lookout. She still didn’t think that the young one was a threat on its own, but she was afraid of what they all could do as a pack if they worked together.

Just as the sun started to rise, a loud roar ripped through the air, reminding Alta how unprotected she was. Her only hope was to remain hidden—and to stay awake—until the frightening sounds stopped. When she was finally able to let down her guard, she fell into a deep sleep, but it didn’t last. Almost immediately, she felt something big crawling over her tail. She scrambled to get up.

A large flat-shelled turtle who was as wide as Alta shuffled out from between her feet. “Sorry about scaring you,” he said in a hoarse whisper.

“Do you know what all that noise was about?” she asked nervously.

“It was those Albertosaurs at the creek. They almost had me this morning. Look what they did.”

She leaned down and saw the long, narrow scratches that ran the whole length of his shell. “Oh my, you were lucky to get away.”

“That’s for sure. I managed to dig myself under the rocks, and I kept my head tucked in. They didn’t stick around—probably went looking for something worth the effort.”

The turtle set off across the sand then called back to Alta, “I’d get out of here if I were you.”
