Chapter Nine

“Theodor!”

Quick’s booming voice rang out from the stage across the empty venue, and all eyes turned toward the door as Tad strolled in with his small entourage.

“How you doing, man?” Quick jumped off the stage and headed straight for him. “Been feeling all right?”

“I’m good, man. I’m good,” Theo said, smiling at his old friend. “Thanks for asking. How ’bout yourself?”

“Doing good. Where’s Penny?” Quick asked.

“Hannah had a big soccer game this weekend, so Penny stayed home with her.”

Shelby watched as the two men hugged and exchanged pleasantries. She forgot sometimes that Quicksilver had grown up in the same town with Tad and his brother, and she watched their exchange with great interest, taking note of the fact that Theo actively avoided talking about his illness if he could.

“Sorry I’m late, Boss.” Tad was sure his tone and the harried expression on his face would tell them all he was dealing with a small measure of drama, and he was relieved when Jesse Lee actually chuckled. The man looked down at his watch.

“Yeah. Might have to dock that whole five minutes out of your paycheck,” Jesse joked, giving him a friendly pat on the arm. “I didn’t know your kids were coming out.”

“Yeah, neither did I,” Tad mumbled. “Mixing the kids with the girlfriend has been interesting so far.”

Jesse Lee laughed again. “It usually is.”

Tad grinned as Jesse Lee walked away, but inside he was still preoccupied with the situation. Shelby was important to him, and he wanted his kids to understand that. But at the same time, he didn’t want to try and force a friendship between them either.

They jumped into soundcheck then, and Shelby sat and chatted with Theo and Diamond the whole time. She could tell True and Honor were having a blast hanging out with the band. Honor especially appeared to be in her element in this atmosphere, and Shelby remembered Tad’s tales of her being in a band back home. At one point, Billy began fooling around playing KISS’ “Rock and Roll All Night,” and Honor picked up her dad’s bass and joined in. They sounded pretty good, and when Shelby looked over at Tad, she’d never seen such a blatant look of pride on his face. It was adorable really, and she fell a little deeper just watching him watch his little girl.

The more she watched them the more she felt that now-familiar ache in her heart. The one that suggested she might have missed out on something precious along the way. Would she have made a good mother with her busy career and crazy schedule? Or would her career have withered and died for the sake of her child? What choices would she have made? She sighed realizing once again there was no point in dwelling on it. It happened, it was over, and she’d moved on. But hearing Tad talk about his kids was one thing. Seeing him interact with them was quite another, and Shelby suddenly felt some foreign emotion she couldn’t name.
