The film finds a telling need, however, to incorporate a fictionalized version of the most famous upper-class suicide in modern Korean history—court official Min Yonghwan’s 1905 sacrifice protesting Japan’s actions—as a plot device to set in motion the exploits of a resistance group that never existed (the “Anti-Ulsa Fifty”). Like the museum’s display, the movie is part of a broad social understanding which fans notions that the Koreans lost their country mainly because they were the underdogs. Although certainly a more pleasing story, such versions only fuel the “ruse of history” approach to the past yet block out the reckoning that still needs to take place to unravel how, for example, the high school squad of Japanese boys pictured here in Seoul in 1908 got there in the first place, and the manner in which they and their children would stay.
