HEATON

Not having the paparazzi stealing every private moment as we toured the village yesterday offered a most pleasant time. But the best fun was doing ordinary things with Liz. She expected nothing from me. No fancy dinners. No shopping sprees. Hell, she even laughed at my bad jokes.

The magnetism Liz emitted also kept me in awe. The carriage driver, the shop owners, the children on the street were drawn to her. Yet she seemed oblivious to her charm.

Which made her more beautiful and attractive.

So my decision to move our relationship forward didn’t come as a surprise. But this choice didn’t come from lust—although I’d cherish making love to her. No, it was the idea I had never been with an honest woman.

“Morning.” Liz stretched and yawned, her golden-red hair a wild, wonderful mess.

“Good morning.” I could get used to seeing her every day like this.

I placed a cup of coffee in front of her. Black, just as I’ve learned she preferred her java.

She smelled the cup with eyes closed. “Coffee is the best creation.”

“Right, but don’t let Adam and Eve hear that.” Even with bed-head hair and smeared mascara, Liz was the most attractive woman I had ever known.

“Don’t laugh.” I held up the activity brochure. “We can pick up digital cameras in the office and hike on marked paths for photo ops of the island. Then tonight’s Hawaiian themed dinner is rather special since it’s on the shoreline. The resort brings in tables and chairs, and we watch the sunset together. Care to do either? Or both?”

The air conditioning offered no relief against the sudden rise of body heat. The eagerness in my voice sounded like a five-year-old on Christmas morning. “I mean, you have to eat, right?”

Liz stared a few seconds before answering. “I’m up for taking advantage of everything the resort offers. And I’ll be hungry after hiking all day.”

Damn. I was hoping she’d be excited to be with me. “Sounds like a date.” I figuratively smacked my head.

“Right. Okay.”

Someone knocked on the door. I opened it to find Kingman, who noticed Liz sitting at the counter. “Splendid news! The staff finished the bungalow. You can move back in.”

The giddy mood suddenly vanished. I had already grown used to her staying here. From Liz’s downcast look, she might have thought the same.

But she quickly recovered. “Perfect.”

With dragging feet, I followed them over. Marissa stood in the living room arranging a vase of flowers. “Welcome back.”

“Oh wow, no damage,” Liz said while checking the rooms. “Everyone did a remarkable job.”

She stopped near a framed canvas propped up on the sofa table—the painting she had adored at Marissa’s shop but didn’t purchase.

Liz’s face goes from shock, to disbelief, to anger. “Why is this here?”

Marissa tipped her head toward me. Then she exchanged a look with her dad, which must’ve been a secret communication, because they left in a hurry.

“Heaton.” Liz placed her hands on her hips. “Why would you spend that kind of money on someone you barely know?”

Not how I thought she’d react.
