After Sophieâs mom picked them up and dropped them back at Alexâs house, Alex decided not to tell her dad what happened at Bostwickâs. He was still floating on air from watching Alex play today, like he had been the one to throw a touchdown pass to Gabe.
Her buddy Gabe.
Or so sheâd thought.
Alex and Sophie were barely through the front door when Jack Carlisle started up about the first Steelers home game tomorrow. In the same breath, he asked if Alex had brought back ice cream for him. She held up the to-go bag in her hand.
âOf course,â he said, âI donât need ice cream to make my day better than it already is.â
âDad,â Alex said. âWe lost!â
âMinor technicality,â he said.
When Alex and Sophie were upstairs, Sophie said, âHe really is over the moon.â
âThatâs why Iâm not going to spoil it by telling him about a maroon like Jeff Stiles,â Alex said.
âMaroon?â
âItâs one of my dadâs expressions,â Alex said. âLike moron, but better.â
âBy the way?â Sophie said. âDonât let that maroon spoil this moment for you, either.â
âHe tried pretty hard,â Alex said, smirking. âBut he was about as good at that as he was at football today.â
They were on Alexâs bed watching To All the Boys Iâve Loved Before on her laptop when her mom called from California. Alex guessed she was calling to see how the big game went.
Alex motioned for Sophie to keep watching and headed downstairs and out to the back porch. She passed through the living room, where her dad was watching the Penn StateâOhio State game.
âSoooooo. How did it go?â her mom said.
Alex told her.
âWait,â her mom said. âYou got to play in the first game and threw a touchdown pass? Get out of town!â
âI know, right? It was almost like I knew what I was doing out there,â Alex said.
âSounds like you proved something today.â
âNot to my teammates,â Alex said, before telling her mom what happened at Bostwickâs.
âNothing you could ever do would impress that boy,â her mom said. âAnd youâre not doing this to impress him anyway.â
âI know.â
âHeâs just mad because you showed him up,â her mom said. âEven if you apparently didnât shut him up.â
âI didnât tell Dad,â she said. âHe just wouldâve gotten mad.â
âSounds like you got a little mad yourself.â
âThe one I should be mad at is Gabe,â Alex said. âI canât figure out how to handle things with him.â
âWell, letâs talk about that,â Liza Borelli said. Alexâs mom wasnât a psychologist, but sometimes she sounded like one.
Football was never going to be her momâs strong suit, even if she was getting better at talking about it. But she was much more skilled at discussing growing-up things.
âHeâs always been such a good friend to you, honey,â she said to Alex. âIt just sounds to me as if heâs under some tremendous peer pressure and isnât handling it particularly well.â
âBut he told me heâd be my friend no matter what.â
âMaybe he wonât be until the season is over.â
Alex bristled. âFriendship isnât supposed to be a seasonal thing, like football.
