OBBLIGATO OR CONTINUO?

An obbligato part is one which must be played as it is written in order to realise the effect of the whole composition. It does not mean ad libitum. In effect, a sonata with obbligato keyboard is a trio (in three parts): the keyboard’s left-hand part, the right-hand part and the flute part, together forming three independent solo voices in balance. On the other hand, in a work for continuo, the solo part is the solo melodic line, the bass supporting this with the figures under the bass line indicating the harmony which can be filled out by the keyboard player, perhaps decorating it according to personal impulse and the requirements of the music. These two distinctions are an important influence on the performance.
