We may use quarter notes or eighth notes instead of half notes, and in a triple meter we may even use sixteenth notes. All this enables us to distinguish the slowness or quickness of the movement, as explained in Book II, Chapter 23.

The figures placed above the notes indicate the beats: 1 indicates the first beat, 2 the second, 3 the third, and 4 the fourth. From this, we can perceive that we are free to substitute for one of the notes designated as a beat whatever rests and other notes are desired, provided that the value of the beat is contained in these rests and other notes. We may furthermore begin and continue using other notes than those we chose for each beat, as long as the value of the beat is contained in these other notes.
