The Neville Inheritance, 1470-8

George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, had married Isabel, daughter of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, in 1469, an important union. Neville supported Edward IV’s claim to the throne until his father-in-law switched his allegiance to Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou. George joined them in France where he was made second in line after Edward of Westminster.

The plan was to exclude Edward IV from the line of succession, either through accusing him of treason or declaring him illegitimate. But the rules changed when Neville married his daughter Anne to Henry VI’s son Edward of Westminster in December 1470. George realised he would never be allowed to replace Edward so he deserted Neville and went back to supporting Edward IV.

Neville’s attempt to return Henry VI to the throne ended with his death at the battle of Barnet in April 1471. Edward died at the battle of Tewkesbury a month later. Richard Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, asked to marry Edward’s widow Anne. His brother George agreed but only after making him surrender the Earldoms of Warwick and Salisbury, the office of Great Chamberlain and most of his estates before he gave his consent.

Despite the deal, the brothers continued to fight over their father-in-law’s inheritance. Edward IV would favour his brother George and he gave him the Earldom of Warwick. But George was still not satisfied and he resumed his plotting against his brother; he would be executed for treason in 1478. The complicated inheritance was eventually divided between cousins, with George’s son Edward taking the Earldom of Warwick while Richard’s son, also Edward, took the Earldom of Salisbury.

Poor Anne would become queen of England when her husband Richard seized the throne in 1483. She became a widow when he was killed at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 and died in obscurity in Beaulieu Abbey after her daughters and sons-in-law had disinherited her.
