To help students reflect on how deeply they are talking, we can help them reflect on their conversations. As the facilitator of talking for learning, we can chart comments that students make in class. Students can analyze the script of their discussions to see how deeply they are thinking and talking. A nice touch is to color-code each level, making their talk very visible. You will hear comments such as, “Wow, we had mostly connecting comments and only two deeper comments. We need to start going deeper with our conversations!” And now you have created a community that is safe emotionally to grow and think together and one that is vital and alive in which students have the desire to be deep thinkers, great communicators, and lifelong learners.
