Multi-Piece Wooden Sticks

Some stickmakers enjoy making multi-piece sticks using a mixture of timbers. The styles, shapes and sizes of these sticks vary considerably, and the imagination, talent and skill of some stickmakers is incredible, with many wonderful examples on display at agricultural shows and country fairs. Fitting caps and spacers to thumb-stick handles using a contrasting coloured timber is a simple example of multi-piece sticks. Laminated handles using thin layers of different timbers glued together make interesting and unique sticks. A few stickmakers carve images using different timbers to enhance particular features of a carved handle. Handles are also made using a mixture of wooden rings glued together on a shaped metal rod. It is difficult to cut the number of accurately angled joints required to make a curved handle using this method, but the results can be impressive when done by a skilled craftsperson.
