A Day in Lisa’s Life

The Wright Brothers and Michael Bloomberg are examples of prominent people who illustrate what it’s like to operate in Mover Mode. You might identify others who fit the description: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who steered the country out of the Great Depression and through the Second World War; two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie; Bill France Jr., who expanded NASCAR from its regional moonshining roots into the popular national sport it is today; Alvin Ailey, who created a new type of dance troupe; the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh, who brought the University of Notre Dame to international prominence during his tenure; and Oprah Winfrey, who, despite the disadvantages of a troubled childhood, built history’s most successful TV talk show and a media empire.

But how does operating in Mover Mode work in the everyday world? Meet Lisa, a persona we’ve created: a woman in her thirties who typically thinks and acts in Mover Mode.

Lisa grew up on a farm, but during high school she decided that agriculture was not for her. She went to college, where she majored in marketing, and after some travel and a variety of entry-level jobs, she secured a position with a large technology company. She has been promoted to senior Web developer and she remains ambitious—someday, perhaps, she’d like to start her own company. She doesn’t lack for friends and she’s been involved with a man, Tyrone, for the last few months. They don’t live together, but they see each other on weekends and often during the week. Overall, life seems pretty good.

On this Thursday, Lisa is up at 5:30 a.m., an hour earlier than usual: She has a midmorning presentation of a new website she has designed for a client and she intends to get to the office early, to rehearse one last time. But first, she has to visit the drugstore to pick up the allergy medication prescription she requested last night. After quickly dressing and eating breakfast, she walks the three blocks to the store. So far, her top-brain strength is serving her well. The day seems to be unfolding exactly as planned.

As Lisa heads to the prescription counter, she passes items she realizes she will soon need. To save herself another trip later, she picks them up now as she moves through the store: shampoo, nail polish, and sunscreen and insect repellent for the kayaking trip she and Tyrone are taking this weekend. With her prescription, the total bill comes to $42. She reaches into her pocketbook—and no wallet. Now, she remembers leaving it on her kitchen counter. (Mover Mode thinking does not ensure having a good memory!)

Lisa silently curses herself for rushing out and quickly considers her options. She knows the store manager—he’d probably extend her short-term credit—but he’s not in yet. She could return her items and come back another time, but she really doesn’t want to sniffle through the day without her allergy medication. She could call Tyrone, who lives nearby, but Tyrone is no morning person, and although he would certainly bail her out, he would do so grudgingly .
