A few methods and utensils are used to mash potatoes, tubers or beans (a holzstampfer, potato ricer or even Moulin Legumes), and perhaps the most familiar to contemporary kitchens is the wavy-wire metal masher. The first wire masher many recognise was patented in 1886 by a W. J. Johnson; its design is simple, effective and easy to manufacture. Metal mashers – and now plastic ones – also come in a variety of gridded patterns. Bean mashers (which can also be used for potatoes) allow the purée to be pressed through suitably sized holes, whose action breaks down the foods in the process. These bean mashers are common in Mexico for puréeing refried pinto beans and other soft ingredients. Historically bean mashers were made of wood, but now are constructed from a simple piece of stamped sheet metal attached to a handle above.
