With a pair of scissors, Tony cuts several small shapes from a piece of textured wallpaper – a helmet, a breastplate and other similar outlines to make up a suit of armour – and sticks them on to a piece of card. He adds other distinctive shapes cut from plain cardboard, which is a little thicker than the textured wallpaper – a sword and a belt on to which he has scored a decorative pattern with a scalpel. Then he places a piece of white paper over the cut-out pieces and rubs all over it with a black wax crayon; the image in relief begins to appear. Because the cardboard pieces stand proud of the textured wallpaper, they are blacker than the rest and the detail of the scoring stands out. To remove the marks where the black wax crayon has gone over the edges of the image, Tony cuts around the figure and mounts him on a rich red background. The result is a perfect brass rubbing of a majestic knight in miniature.
