When Mother Ignaçia was the steward of the Santo Cristo de Milagre,21 the Archbishop, on the final day of the novena,22 entered the convent, bringing with him a boy with a guitar [on a strap] around his neck. When the procession left the choir, he ordered the cloister grille curtains closed so as not to be seen by people outside. Once the procession ended, during which time the Archbishop was seated in the chapel, the entire community of sisters was present. After watching the dance that was held there, he ordered the sisters who were musicians to play the outavado23 so the boy could dance. But the sisters did not know this tune, even by name, so the Archbishop himself seized the guitar and played it, and the boy danced; and so that the boy would not lose the beat, the Archbishop wiggled in the chair upon which he was seated.24 In order to do the bidding of this Sister [Ignaçia], he shoved aside his fear of His Majesty, in whose name he had already prohibited all dancing and performances, by allowing them to be done. He also relaxed other restrictions, which gave cause for concern about damaging the credibility of this convent, and cause for concern of the names of its sisters appearing in infamous satires. In order to hide this behavior of his, he goes about disparaging us with lies. Aside from being too familiar with the aforementioned Mother, he was also too familiar with the other sisters, who are hardly decent and are very immature. That is all I am going to say on the matter so as to avoid singling out those involved, names of whom we already provided to Your Majesty in the last monsoon. And if His Majesty does not believe this news and asks to hear from somebody better informed, those sisters who witnessed this and much more are still alive.

We did not report this to His Majesty earlier, because, on one hand, we can obviously assume that the Archbishop would then treat us with even greater fury; on the other, previously we wanted to patiently endure his violences and injustices rather than file a complaint against him, since it might seem to His Majesty that we are impertinent women who are not truly suffering. As far as the Archbishop’s actions are concerned, we also wished to conceal them hoping that he would reflect on his own person and character and would restrain himself. And also [another reason we delayed in writing is that] Joanna de Ave Maria (who is with God),25 the sister-in-law of Dom Christovão de Mello, wanted to write and report this to His Majesty, but she died from consumption because the Archbishop harassed and punished her excessively.26 The Bishop of Peking, Dom Francisco de Purificação, who at that time was our Confessor General, asked him in all honesty not to do such things.
