CHAPTER SEVEN

MINUS ONE

“ In March 1973, I was booked as a speaker on a cruise that left from Jamaica for Cartagena, Colombia, the San Blas Islands, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman Island. This was to be my first neotropical birding experience, but was hampered by the fact that there was no good field guide for any area south of Mexico. I planned to first spend four days in Jamaica, and the Field Guide to the Birds of the West Indies, by James Bond, was quite good. In Jamaica I saw many widespread West Indian species, and all but six of the Jamaican endemics. So my first neotropical species—with thousands more to come—was the Jamaican Oriole, seen in a park in Kingston.”
