Juniper hovered over a basin of moon water, eyeing the concoction with her brow raised. “Corbin is going to regret asking me for help,” she cackled, sounding like an evil villain as her laughter bounced off the walls.

“I’m making the right choice, aren’t I?”

Juniper smiled sweetly. “If your gut is telling you to talk to Corbin, then I think this is a good idea. He seemed genuine when I spoke to him.”

I scratched my arm, the nervous tic driving me crazy. I wanted to talk to Corbin, morbid curiosity fueling my decision more than anything else. But I also missed the mischievous beta wolf. Corbin and I had become friends in a short amount of time, and even though I struggled to trust him, I missed him. I wanted to know what was going on, and I was curious what he wanted to talk about. Knowledge was power in this game. I was working on building alliances, so perhaps having an inside look at what was going on behind the scenes would help me better defend myself—or even rescue my dad.

The fact that Alexei went to Juniper for help, and conceded defeat when she refused to give him a masking spell, solidified the decision for me. Plus, if Corbin was willing to swallow his pride and accept help from the girl who dumped him, then I could be open to listening to him.

“I can’t wait until he looks in the mirror,” Juniper said, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“Do I even want to know?”

Juniper added a vial of something that looked disgustingly similar to snot, but in the short time I’d known her, I’d learned not to ask what went into her potions. “I’m just making him work for it. What Corbin said on that recording was messed up, and I will always choose a Kappa sister over one of my hookups. But I do care about him. I just like messing with him, too.”

I forced a smile. “He is fun to mess with.”

She started stirring the potion counterclockwise, her eyes trained on me. “Is there something you want to tell me, Nicole?”

“Why do you ask?” I replied, feeling nervous.

She stopped stirring and tapped her spoon on the rim of her cauldron three times. “You know you can trust me, right? Whatever you tell me is safe.”

I’d been struggling with telling anyone about my mother and her potential supernatural heritage. But since the visions Macey showed me created more questions than answers, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have Juniper on my side. She had already proven herself to be a trustworthy friend and a strong ally in this mess.

But I was still so fucked in the head. I felt unsure of everything, but I knew my reluctance to trust was holding me back. If I let Juniper—and maybe even Cristian—in fully, maybe I’d have a more solid plan to get out of this mess.

“Okay,” I breathed. “I do have something to tell you. But I’m nervous because I’m not quite sure what it means.
