6. Problems associated with the parousia (4:13–5:11)

Paul had clearly spoken about the parousia (see on 2:19) to good effect, and the Thessalonians were in no doubt that it would take place. But he had not dealt with all the problems associated with it, some of which obviously came up after his departure. One of them has been dealt with in the preceding section, namely the importance of earning one’s living in the interval. Now Paul turns to other difficulties and treats them in a way that has left its mark on the life of the church. Rolston points out that almost every funeral service uses words from this passage.
