51 Men’s evening dress, Sartorial Art Journal, November 1904.

The trousers for evening dress were quite generously cut, to allow for comfort when sitting at table. They had a buckle at the back of the waist for adjustment of fit, and some had a band of velvet ribbon running down the side. They were always black, and made of fine woven wool. Just as with day wear trousers, they were worn with braces. Socks for evening wear were usually of silk, and clipped into sock suspenders. Black was the accepted norm, but decorated socks were available too, and these had embroidered fronts with simple spotted or striped designs. Footwear was always black, and patent leather shoes with buttoned cloth tops were recommended. Patent leather dance pumps were reserved for wear at balls.
