The bow is the name for the front end of a ship.

“Lifeboats! What do they need of lifeboats?” said one woman. “This ship could smash a hundred icebergs and not feel it.”

When the crew could find no more women and children to fill the first boats, they allowed men to board. Even so, many of the first lifeboats left the ship less than half full.

As the bow of the Titanic sank lower and lower, though, people began to realize the lifeboats might be their only hope. More and more of them wanted a place in the boats.

Even though they were afraid, most people behaved bravely. Many men helped their wives and children into boats knowing they might never see them again.

“You go and I’ll stay awhile,” said one man as he helped his new wife into a boat. When another woman begged her husband to get into a boat with her, he said, “No, I must be a gentleman.”

Some women refused to leave the ship without their husbands. Ida Straus started to board a boat, then turned back. This is what people heard her say to her husband, Isidor:

“We have been living together for many years. Where you go, I go. As we have lived, so will we die together.”
