If you’re caring for a kitten with a URI, take swift steps to start supportive care early. The nasal passage should be kept clean by gently wiping away any visible mucus with a warm, wet cloth. Congested kittens may benefit from saline nasal drops, or even a nebulizer treatment. Nebulizers are affordable, compact machines that can be very useful for delivering saline or a prescription medication to the kitten via inhalation, but in a pinch, congested kittens can also be placed in a steamy bathroom near a hot shower or a warm humidifier for fifteen minutes to help open the airway. An appropriate oral antibiotic may be essential to helping fight most URIs, so talk with your veterinarian. Eyes should be kept clean and free of mucus, and a topical eye ointment should be applied if swelling, redness, or discharge is present. In more extreme cases, additional supportive care may be necessary, such as supported feeding or fluid therapy for kittens with decreased appetite or dehydration. Note that kittens with blocked noses can’t smell their food, which may cause decreased appetites—so try using extra-stinky foods or adding some tuna juice on top to stimulate their appetites.
