Makeup artists we love… and lost

I can’t write a chapter on makeup without mentioning a couple of the great artists who are no longer with us. The late, loved, and very-much-missed Way Bandy was a makeup artist who famously transformed many of the celebrated faces of the ’70s and ’80s. Way used his makeup like a sculptor, finding the bones, the hollows, the highlights, and making us look differently at the same faces we had become familiar with. After Way finished his handiwork, I hardly recognized the woman who gazed back at me from the mirror. He gave me cheekbones before I knew they were in there hiding! In Way’s skilled hands, makeup was a powerful tool. We did many Cosmo covers together—I remember studying my face in the mirror, trying to figure out how he did it, before I had to wash his artistry down the drain.

I also had the great pleasure of working with the late Kevyn Aucoin. Kevyn had that special ability to see beauty and sculpt the canvas of the face. As he worked, he’d tell me about overcoming the difficulties of growing up in the South as a gay man with a passionate interest in fashion and the art of makeup. But he remained true to his dreams and he found respect and success. That’s the most important lesson. He was an artist who died too soon, but not before helping create indelible images of beauty, plus a great line of beauty products that bear his name. It was an honor to work with and learn from two such brilliant artists.

Our industry lost a lot of truly amazing people during the AIDS epidemic back in the ’80s. It was a scary and sad time. I have a special place in my heart for two more sweethearts and major talents with whom I had the honor of working—Vincent Nasso and Bob Rule. Vincent was a brilliant makeup artist and a lot of fun. We traveled together for many shoots—my favorite was a trip to Saint Bart’s for Glamour magazine. We had so much fun! From Vincent I learned about earth tones and orange-y, glowing colors, as well as the importance of enjoying each precious moment of life we are blessed with. My most memorable trip with makeup artist Bob Rule was to Costa Careyes, Mexico, where we dressed up like pirates and painted masks right on our faces. He was brilliant and knew exactly how to apply only what was needed. He made everyone he touched feel beautiful—what a wonderful gift!
