BOB’S FUTURE

In the meantime, my oldest son, Bob, had grown into an outstanding young man. He had an easy smile and was well liked. Throughout his school years at Boston Latin School, which was a top school in Boston, and then at Newton High School, he had been an honor student. Prior to his graduation, I sat him down in my office and said, “Bob, what do you plan to do after you graduate?” He said he didn’t know. So I said, “Do you have any ideas? You’re getting to the stage where you have to make a decision as to what you would like to do with your life. Would you like to be an accountant, a lawyer, a doctor? You need to make up your mind so you’ll know what school to attend to further your education.” Bob and I talked often, in the car, at my office, in the house. We had a close relationship.

He said, “You know, Dad, what I’d really like? I’d like to be like you. I’d like to be in your business.”

I said, “You’re kidding!”

He said, “No.”

Of course, I was very pleased to hear this. I asked him if he realized how hard I worked, what a difficult job it was. He said he didn’t mind. He wanted to be just like me. He wanted to do what I did.

“If that’s what you want,” I said, “I suggest you go to your guidance counselor in high school. Tell him you talked with your dad and that he thought you should apply for hotel restaurant school.” As I saw it, Cornell University’s Hotel-Restaurant School, the Statler School, in Ithaca, New York, was the number one school. The second best, I thought, was at Michigan State University, called The Kellogg Center. Bob applied to both schools. Initially he didn’t get into Cornell. Michigan State accepted him.

During his freshman year at Michigan State he buckled down and got top grades. He landed on the dean’s list. He became the leader for the freshman dormitory group and known around campus. After he finished the first year with honors, I told him that he should go to Cornell. He protested and said he didn’t want to go. He was king of the hill at Michigan. I said, “Bobby, all your life you’re going to say that you wanted to go to Cornell and didn’t make it. You might as well go there.”

“How do you know they’ll take me?” he asked.

“They’ll take you. They’ll review what you did at Michigan State and take you.” But he was doubtful. So I told him that if he graduated from an Ivy League school, it would benefit him for the rest his life. If he wanted to get into one of the top business schools, having graduated from Cornell would give him an advantage. I finally convinced him and we made an appointment to meet with the dean of the Cornell Hotel-Restaurant School. Based on Bob’s impressive history at Michigan State, the school accepted him.
