I stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel, brushing out my wet hair. Holland sat at the dining room table, leaning over a sketchbook. Next to him, there was a mug of thick red liquid I tried not to look too hard at. Across from him, though, a cup of coffee and a croissant sat waiting for me.

The warmth in my heart was startling. I straightened, watching him for a moment and resisting the urge to gather my things and bolt. This felt safe. This felt like home. That was ridiculous - I hardly knew him.

I swallowed my bewilderment and crossed the room, tracing my hand up Holland’s back and leaning forward to kiss his cheek. He hummed into my touch, closing his sketchbook before I could see it, leaning back to smile at me.

“Sleep well?” He murmured. I’d left him in bed to shower, thinking he was sound asleep. I supposed I couldn’t sneak around a vampire’s apartment.

“Exceptionally,” I said, kissing his cheek again. I moved to kiss him on the mouth, shocked when he paused, tilting his head back slightly. I blinked. Holland reached back to tap his mug. He was drinking blood, which meant he tasted like it too. I kissed his cheek harder this time and basked in the sound of his cheerful hum.

I sat down across from him, pulling my phone from my purse hanging on the chair. There was a text from Willa a few minutes ago.

Are you staying with Holland today?

My fingers hovered over the keyboard as I glanced up at the vampire across from me. He’d opened the sketchbook again, his brow furrowed in concentration. I watched him for a moment. Despite the fire alarms in my mind, I leaned into the warm feeling of sitting in his apartment with him.

I didn’t come to Paris to fall in love.

So why did I feel like one wrong move and I’d fall hard?

“What are you brooding about?” Holland asked, not glancing up.

I almost asked him to take me back to the hotel. Almost. Instead, I took a sip of my coffee. “What do you want to do today?” I asked.

Now, his eyes melted like honey. He closed the book, sitting back in his chair. “Anything in Paris you haven’t seen yet? Or I can throw you into my bed and never let you leave.”

I blushed crimson. Holland’s eyes darkened and he sat back, lifting his mug to take a long drink. The red stained his lips. I watched him lick it away.

A vampire.

Holland was a vampire.

And I wanted to fall into his bed over and over again.

I opened my mouth to answer him when my phone rang. It was Indy.

I straightened before answering her FaceTime, trying to position it so she couldn’t see much of the background to realize I was in someone’s apartment instead of my hotel room.

“I wanted to call and apologize,” Indy said. She sat on her couch with a long groan. Her hair was in a messy knot on top of her head and her makeup was smudged under her eyes.
