CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

THEA

I didn’t know what had gotten into me. Yes, I was pissed at Julian, but deep down, I knew why he hadn’t told me about my mother. Because I would have demanded to go to her.

Like I was doing right now.

Unlike Julian’s private jet, which oozed masculinity, Jacqueline’s was clearly custom-designed for her. I trailed my finger along the gold inlay of the polished white side table. Across from me, Jacqueline was busily texting, her legs thrown over the side of the plush leather seat. After a moment, she tossed her phone into her lap and sighed.

“Now we’re both in trouble,” she said with a resigned smile.

“If Julian is mad at you—”

“Not Julian,” she said quickly. “My mother. I was supposed to go over for dinner this week.”

“What?” I nearly jumped out of my chair, but my lap belt held me in place. “Why didn’t you tell me? Can we turn around?”

“Nonsense. We aren’t going back,” she scoffed with a wave of her manicured hand. “I didn’t tell you because you needed me.”

“And the Rites?”

Her smile flattened. “I know. I’m terrible. I really will go through with it if it means saving my sister.”

“But?” I prompted.

She shifted in her seat, folding her legs under her and ignoring the safety belt unfastened at her sides. “There was a reason I resisted marrying Julian. You know, other than the fact that it would be like marrying my brother.” She gagged. “No offense.”

“None taken.” If she had married him, things might be very, very different right now. I couldn’t even imagine what that world would be like. Just thinking about my mate sent guilt churning in my stomach. I pushed thoughts of him away and focused on my friend. “So, what was the real reason?”

“I was in love with someone else,” she said softly. “Sometimes, I think she might have been my mate, but things were different back then.”

“And you couldn’t be with her because she was a woman?” I guessed.

“Vampires are far more relaxed about such things,” she explained with a smile. “We’ve seen every version of sexuality there is, but the Rites are more conservative.”

“They’re all about making little vampire babies.” Just saying it made my heart flutter. That’s what the Rites wanted from me.

“Purebloods wanted to grow their family trees.” She shrugged. “Who can blame them?”

“There’s something I don’t quite understand,” I admitted. “If a baby is half familiar and half vampire, then why does it become a vampire? Do they ever become witches?”

“Not officially. There are rumors, of course. That some children are born and turned when they reach the age of the Frenzy.”

“Frenzy?” I repeated. That sounded…bad.

“Full-blooded vampires like Julian and me are born vampires, obviously. But for those born to a familiar and a vampire, they age like humans until they hit the age of the Frenzy. Basically sometime in their twenties, usually late twenties but everyone matures differently, their vampire genetics begin to reveal themselves.”

“And then they go into a Frenzy?”

“All vampires experience it,” she explained.
