Owl should have been sleeping. It’s what any sensible Strigidae would do during the daylight hours. But instead he found himself flicking an eye open every time the glass doors at the ground level of the apartment building across the street began to whirl, depositing a pedestrian or two on the sidewalk.

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, it wasn’t her. But when the slight girl emerged, Owl’s pinfeathers would bristle with purpose and he’d chase the sleep from his head with a ruffling shake. Except—

There she was, walking out the doors and up the sidewalk. The older girl walked beside her, matching her stride for stride. They crossed at the crosswalk and continued on together, headed for the park, or the botanical gardens, or the bay. Actually together. They walked side by side. They even laughed as they talked.

OOOOoooo, Owl crooned. OOOOoooo.

Perhaps the little hatchling didn’t need him looking out for her. Perhaps it was time to return to the forest, to the misty heights of the redwood trees, where he belonged. After all, no one needed him here. Not anymore.
