Etiquett e on the River

FLY FISHING CAN be described in many different ways. Some of my favorites are tranquil, serene, quiet, and calming. However, there are times when we can let the actions of others ruin a perfectly good day of fishing if we aren’t careful.

Many times I have been in situations where I’ve thought, “Did that really just happen?” Once I had a fly fisher cast so close to me that he became tangled in my line. I’ve had kayakers run mindlessly into my drift boat while not paying attention to what they were doing.

On one trip with my sister, Cindy, and my nephew, Cody, we were having a wonderful day wade fishing in a beautiful spot on the river. A fisherman in a johnboat with a large, noisy motor came upriver at a high rate of speed, throwing an enormous wake and almost swamping our waders. I thought it was so rude that I couldn’t help shouting out in anger to let him know that I didn’t appreciate his behavior. At the time, I felt justified and empowered by speaking my mind. However, after my anger cooled, I was left with an empty feeling, and I was truly embarrassed by my actions. It wasn’t the example I wanted to set for my nephew, and it certainly isn’t what fly fishing is all about. I thought, “Where is the peacefulness in this?” That very day I decided to make a change. I would do everything possible to approach my fishing trips with an attitude of thankfulness, patience, and humility. I now carry a printed scripture verse in my boat bag as a reminder:
