Chapter 6

DYLAN AND I DIDN’T agree on everything. No couple did. But this was the first time we were at such odds. We loved each other dearly, but we were also beginning to see the very stark line drawn in the sand between us.

Mothers were a touchy subject that way. Family in general, I supposed.

After Mama Hermosa went to her room to pray for the rest of the evening, Dylan disappeared up to the belfry to scrub it clean for the handful of cousins who would be staying for the weekend. He’d be sleeping there for the next couple of nights too, despite his mother learning just how we’d broken the curse.

She’d taken the new much better than I’d expected. I even overheard her telling him that she would say a prayer to Saint Nicholas for me on her way upstairs, which was super sweet of her. Now if I could just convince my mother to give an inch, maybe we could get somewhere.

“I don’t understand why you degrade yourself this way,” Nessa said, curling her nose up at the pot of water I was boiling noodles in on the stove. “That’s not even a cauldron.”

I shrugged and reread the directions printed on the sauce pouch to avoid her withering gaze. “I told Dylan I would refrain from using magic while his mother was here.”

“But she’s not even in the room.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Then what is the point? I’m confused,” she said, holding her palms up when I scowled at her.

The point was I already felt guilty enough for the small bit of magic I’d used to clean the grass stain off my dress after rescuing Broomzilla in the backyard this afternoon. Add in the guilt I felt for the way my mother had talked to my fiancé and for losing my cousin’s evil pooch, and well, let’s just say I’d met my wicked quota for the day.

I sighed and turned my back to my mother so I could hunt down a colander to strain the noodles. I had no need for one when I cooked with magic, so it took digging through four different cabinets before I located a large mesh sieve. Close enough.

I finished fixing the mac and cheese and filled two bowls before joining my mother at the breakfast nook table. Dylan had opted to kill off the lunch leftovers, and his mother was too engrossed in her prayers—or too much of a nervous wreck—to bother with dinner. So, it was just me and the lady in black tonight. Oh, and the awkward silence that might as well have had tentacles and fangs for as terrified as I was of it. Though trying to make small talk with my mother wasn’t much better.

I readjusted my shower cap. The rainbow-colored plastic bonnet was the only thing keeping my deep conditioning oil from running down my neck and face. With only my mother to impress—who, let’s face it, wouldn’t have been impressed even if I’d been wearing the crown jewels—I didn’t care what I looked like.
