Provide Several of the Same Toy

When designing spaces in the classroom, set yourself and the children up for success by providing identical multiples of toys. Infants who are imitating the actions of others and are engaging in parallel play can then expand those skills without unnecessary conflicts over sharing. If there is just one drum, for example, one infant will bang it, and another will come over to imitate the banging—and then probably try to take the drum. But if there are two identical drums on the shelf, each child is likely to select one, look at the other child, and begin to drum side by side. Problem solved!
