CHAPTER 40

JAMESON

Lauren hadn’t been lying when she said she’d help. Help was too mild of a word for all that she pulled off. She’d contacted the vendors and their associates. Each time I saw her on the phone, she was smiling and nodding, verifying they could make it work for her on short notice. Her ability to shift and juggle was admirable, and the way she could relate to the reps and charm them was an enviable skill. Lauren was a badass go-getter when she set her sights on something.

By Friday, the preliminary arrangements had begun to be delivered and the factory had been adjusted. Spare equipment was relocated and storage units were set aside. It wasn’t a debilitating setback to rearrange the factory, but it had taken quite a bit of effort and a decent amount of finagling with the forklifts.

I stayed late since I knew everything was arranged at my dad’s firm. Will and Nathan had been bummed I wouldn’t go out with them tonight, but I knew if I didn’t stay and prepare, the stress of procrastinating would make next week even more stressful. I couldn’t believe how quickly things were coming together for us to throw such an elaborate event within a week’s time.

My dad was pleased when I announced the location and the e-vites went out promptly. Plenty of chatter had already been going around about it, and the RSVPs that had been sent back showed that we could count on an impressive turnout. Andrew had handled most of those details, and he’d been proud to tell me and Lauren via a call that we’d have about 1500 guests. That was the factory’s max capacity, so it was safe to say we’d have a full house.

“Are you sure this is okay?” I asked Lauren as I collected our wrappers from “dinner.” She’d admitted her Friday tradition at home was for one of the roommates to bring home takeout. Tonight was Karen’s turn, but she was stuck on overtime at work. The rest of the girls seemed to have something that had come up at the last minute, so Lauren said she was fine with a fast food dinner delivered to us.

“Yeah.” She shrugged as she sat back down near where we’d been putting together gift baskets. “I’m a born and raised Texan. You show me beef and I’ll eat it.”

I grinned, glad that she was still confident in herself, no matter what. Some girls could be so picky about their diet, and Lauren’s laidback whatever attitude was a breath of fresh air.

Lauren had started collecting an assortment of things to include in each basket. I’d browsed through the specialty tea bags and samples that she’d brought in—something from her friend Jenny. Each was attached to a business card, which was standard for these kinds of items. Andrew had also dropped off a couple of totes for things he’d had brought into the office. Most of the baskets held Watson Wicks candle products, like wood wick luxury candles, wax melts, and sample tealights of different scents.
