I’d like to follow that thought, and see if we can’t use it to unify the periods before and after the Second World War. The idea of the single, uniform good takes us back to our discussion of Popular Fronts, since the whole premise of prewar international politics was the reducibility of ethics to a unity, and the expression of that unity in a single system. On the left, the political instantiation of anti-fascism is the Popular Front, which reduces Europe to fascists and anti-fascists and which is designed ultimately to protect the homeland of revolution, the Soviet Union. And as you noted in connection with Spain, the way the Soviets set up governments in Eastern Europe in the first place was precisely on the Popular Front model.
