Moses and Elijah: The Answer about the Prophets

‘The commentators might not understand why Peter wanted to make huts for Moses and Elijah and Jesus, but we can,’ said a Sufi friend. ‘Our people are always building places for holy people, especially around their tombs, and they had no tomb for either Moses or Elijah. We want to keep the presence of those holy people, and to visit them to get their blessing.’

There are other things that could have been in Peter’s mind. Perhaps he was practising the important Jewish virtue of hospitality, saying, ‘It is a good thing that you brought us so that we can make places for you and your visitors to stay in.’ Perhaps he simply thought that this was a wonderful event, and he wanted to make it last longer. The Gospels tell us that Peter himself did not know what he was saying. However, since all the Synoptic Gospels record it, it must be significant. Peter’s words symbolize the mistaken idea that Jesus is basically the same as Moses and Elijah. In response, God glorifies and affirms his Son, while the law-giver and the zealous prophet recede from view.What, then, does the transfiguration tell us about how Jesus relates to Moses and the law, and to Elijah and the prophets?[14]
