A Tale: Fire! Fire! Pants on Fire!
Think of someone who instinctively and consistently overreacts to a crisis. Whether itâs a big emergency or an annoying challenge, you can count on this personâs emotional eruptionâa shutdown in reasoned thinking as the body and mind of the overreactor are consumed by emotions, feelings, and uncensored despair. Then, just as predictablyâonce the initial emotional wave rises and peaksâa calmer, more considered mind prevails as the rational mind kicks in. Questions start emerging as the facts of the situation are gathered, alternatives are explored, and a tentative solution resolves the crisis.
The person we just described is a lifelong colleague who is loved dearly. But she is what some call the crazymaker in your life, because it seems like she experiences one crisis after anotherâan unending stream of urgencies that wear her, and you, out. In this case, it all began with a move, and her first urgent call informed us that the next day her movers would be there but she would not. Could someone manage the move-in with the moving truck? Yes, but not without a lot of inconvenience in rearranging our day. A few days later, she called and said to meet her at the gas station immediately, because her purse had been snatched from the front seat of her car while she was inside paying. A third incident, from a menu of many, involved her car being towed for a parking violation. She called a friend, fifty miles away, to come into the city so she could get money and claim her car. Fortunately, these impetuous reactions are often anticipated, understood, and acceptedâor enduredâby those familiar with her emergencies and who must help to deal with them. But it does cause one to think about how important it is to develop reasoning skills.
