Professors expect students to be able to learn through reading.

For my own part, I’m almost more convinced of the importance of reading by an anecdote than I am by that data. Some years ago, I was part of a panel at a local, open-enrollment community college. The panel was given to an audience of the college’s instructors, and I was the lone representative of K–12 education (a scary thought, I know). During the question-and-answer time, a professor of nursing stood up, looked right at me, and described how her nursing students were incapable of reading an assigned text and preparing to be quizzed on that text’s most important ideas. “The greatest weakness I see in my nursing students,” she said, “is that they don’t know how to learn through reading. They expect me to tell them everything.” This was not a professor of literature or someone working with high-level graduate students; rather, she was an instructor at an open-enrollment college that helps fill the growing need for qualified nurses in the United States. And her students, she decried, seemed unable to learn from reading.
