Box 5.5. Theory to Practice: Encouraging Empathy and Perspective-taking

One very basic way to promote students’ moral and prosocial development is to encourage their perspective-taking, empathy, and desire to take into account the needs of others (Barbarin & Odom, 2009; Comunian & Gielen, 2006; Gibbs et al., 2007). In general, teachers want to provide opportunities for students to share their points of view and listen to the alternate perspectives of their classmates. Here are some strategies that teachers can employ to help students see the perspectives of others with young students in early childhood and the elementary grades (Frey et al., 2000; Nucci, 2009; Watson & Ecken, 2003; Upright, 2002):

Student Conflict Resolution: Use interpersonal conflicts in the classroom as opportunities to encourage young children to look at the situation from their peer’s perspective and participate in active problem-solving to resolve the conflict.

Stories Illustrating Emotional Understanding: Have students read short stories that illustrate key concepts in emotional understanding, especially how people’s feelings about the same event may differ. Students can discuss the story, clarify their understanding of the characters and situations involved, talk in groups, and reflect on the story’s message through writing or drawing exercises.

Role-playing: Engage students in role-playing activities around common social problems that can occur at school, and allow them to share their personal experiences.
