CHAPTER 12

Ember snarled. He lashed a paw at Sandstorm’s snout, but she effortlessly dodged the blow. He ended up swiping thin air. Undeterred, Ember lashed out a second time. Yet again, he missed. Ember let out a frustrated growl. He twisted around to glare at his guards for support.

“WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!” fumed the Fire Wolf king. “GET OVER HERE AND HELP ME!” He looked back at Sandstorm, trying to appear threatening. But that was difficult to manage while squashed beneath a wolf who was twice his size, at least a hundred times more muscular, and at least a billion times scarier.

Ember cringed when her saliva dripped onto the sand, right beside his face. He gazed up at her dribbling, jagged fangs with newfound wariness. He felt unnerved, and rightfully so. Ember may be king now, but he was still helpless and weak. It was time Sandstorm reminded him of his place; reminded him of her sheer power.

Five burly guards thundered toward Sandstorm and Ember, their paws kicking up an ominous cloud of dust. Their eyes were menacing as they powered up for their elemental attacks. If Sandstorm didn’t do something, she’d be toast—literally!

I’ve got this, she reminded herself, taking in a deep breath, and summoning all her concentration. I’m Sandstorm the Legend, Elementa’s hero. I laugh in the face of evil. Nobody threatens the peace while I’m around. I just need to focus. I can do this. She closed her eyes, shut out the ferocious snarls around her, and inhaled deeply.

When Sandstorm opened her eyes, they were full of clarity and power. She lifted one paw toward the Fire Wolf soldiers—and summoned a wave of sand! It crashed into her foes with surprising force. They whirled away, skidding across the desert floor. Once they came to a stop, they laid there in a daze. Then they started to wipe the soot out of their eyes, growling with frustration.

Sandstorm was pleasantly surprised. She hadn’t expected her ability to work again so soon. She supposed all the adrenaline and rage pumping through her veins was giving her the boost she needed to use her power.

Too bad for Ember, she thought smugly.

More of Ember’s soldiers noticed what was happening. They broke away from their clash with the Earth Wolves, rushing to Ember’s aid. Sandstorm blasted them away effortlessly, a smirk on her face.

She had missed the thrill of dominating her enemies. This is what she was born to do. This was who she was—who she wanted to be. A hero. A defender. A threat to all things evil and wrong, like Ember.

Rage glistened in his orange eyes, and he glared at Sandstorm with a livid expression. If he had an elemental power, he probably would have burned Sandstorm to a crisp right about now. She didn’t feel phased by his hatred, though. In fact, her feelings were mutual. She disliked Ember as much as he disliked her, if not more.

“You know what?” the Earth Wolf rumbled. “I finally realize why I never liked you.
