Eels still creep me out.

And there was not just one eel. Oh no. We were lucky enough to have a whole family of them waiting to greet us.

I shudder just thinking about the one that slithered around my legs.

“Oh, stop being such a baby, Reyes.” Noor slaps my arm.

“What? I didn’t say anything.” Did I mention how annoying she is.

“You don’t have to. Every single emotion flies across your face like a neon sign.”

“Guys! Focus,” Nathan says as he helps Devin dry off. At least they didn’t have creepy crawlers slithering around in their big metal tub of water.

Once we made it out of the tank, Bobby took us back to the storage room where he keeps his secret stash of supplies and clothes for League Warriors that need to make a jump through the water. But I wasn’t about to let go of my wet NFL Falcon’s T-shirt. Bobby knew why I wanted it so badly and found a dryer in the back so I could wear it again.

Now with dry clothes, water, snacks and a first aid kit, we’re ready with enough supplies to get us to our next destination. Katrina and Noor rewrap Devin’s bandages, trying to stop the bleeding from the large gash on his body.

“Someone needs to stitch that up,” I say. “And fast.”

Devin can barely keep his eyes open. He grabs Nathan’s arm. “Zamir. Needs help, too. I can feel him. He’s fading. Hurry.”

“Where do we go, Bobby?” Nathan asks.

“Remember that pizza place on Second Street?”

We all turn around, shooting darts of massive frowns right at him.

“Papalucci’s?” Nathan asks. “Didn’t that place shut down?”

Noor rolls her eyes. “You want pizza right now? Bobby, we don’t have time for pizza.”

Her whole grouchy vibe doesn’t faze him one bit. He nods and winks with his ocean blue eyes. “There’s always time for pizza, Tiger Lily.”

“Don’t call me that. I hate when you call me that.”

He grins wider. “I know.”

Bobby must have forgotten that you’re never supposed to pull on the tail of a tiger, because I could have sworn that a low growl just came out of Noor.

Bobby turns back to Nathan. “Nate. Trust me?”

“With my life.”

Bobby slaps Nathan on the back. “Then follow me. You and Matti, take Devin. I’ll open the portal to get us there.”

Nathan and I lift Devin and wait for Bobby to open the portal to our old hangout. Once we started training at the League, we hardly got to come back to Long Beach. Missions all over the world—yes. Our homes? Not so much.

When the portal opens, we step into a dark, musty old restaurant. The moon’s light streaming through the dusty windows reveals red and white checkered tablecloths sitting on scattered tables. Black wooden chairs sit on the tables resting upside down. The place looks like it’s been closed for a long time.

“Matti, this way,” Bobby says.

Nathan and I help Devin limp back to the kitchen where long thick plastic strips hang down from a doorway, leading to the back of the restaurant.
