CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Mama, why did you bring a U-Haul for your visit?”

Carter stared at the large truck his brother Asher had driven up to his house behind his mom’s SUV. She and his brothers Onyx and Wren were already climbing out of the vehicle, Wren slapping a dollar into O’s outstretched hand.

“Told you it’d be the first thing he said,” Onyx crowed, pocketing the bill.

“You could have at least said hello first,” Wren grumbled, going around to the back of the SUV and opening the hatch to start removing luggage.

Carter ignored both of them, crossing his arms and facing the woman who had birthed him, who had the audacity to smile sweetly as she hurried over and wrapped her arms around him. She barely reached his chin, but her grip was strong as she held him in the hug longer than was probably necessary.

“My sweet boy!” She finally released him, but only so she could grasp his face in both hands and peer up at him. “You look tired, baby. Are you tired? Have you been getting enough sleep? You need to make sure—”

“Mama,” he growled, then cleared his throat and grimaced apologetically when she leveled him with her Mama Bear Glare—patent pending. “Mama,” he said more evenly, “why is Asher driving a U-Haul?”

“I told you we were coming,” she said, stepping back and waving at him like he was being ridiculous.

“For a visit! Not to move here. Mama, you can’t just move into a pack’s territory—”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, thank you, dear. Luckily, I do know a thing or two about pack politics.”

He took a deep breath, feeling a headache beginning to throb behind his eyes. “I know you do, so what makes you think you can just come here with all of your things and—”

“Dear heart, your brothers and I became official members of the Kincaid Pack a month ago. I asked Alpha Kincaid not to tell you because I wanted it to be a surprise, but I can see that wasn’t a great idea.” She planted her hands on her round hips. “Are you really upset we’re here to stay? It’s been so hard being separated…”

“Of course not,” he said quickly, scrubbing at his face. It had been hard for him too, but he’d butted heads with his uncle too much to stay in his old pack. He’d never wanted to challenge him to be alpha, but staying where he hadn’t respected the person leading the pack had gotten to the point where if he didn’t leave, he would have become alpha.

But his family was moving to Meyerville at the worst possible time.

“It’s just… there’s so much going on right now,” he said carefully, eyeing his brothers where they looked to be squabbling over something at the back of the SUV. “And housing is limited at the moment—”

“Well, I sold my business,” she said, moving around him and toward his front door. “I couldn’t very well continue it from here. I’ve already picked out a plot of land, thanks to that lovely Enforcer Nico, and am working on having a house built.
