THEY CAN CHEW YOU UP BUT THEY GOTTA SPIT YOU OUT
Directed by Ed Bianchi
Story by David Simon & Ed Burns; teleplay by David Simon
The show opens with Officer Beatrice “Beadie” Russell—a single mother working as a port police officer after bumping up from toll-taking at the Fort McHenry Tunnel—walking investigators from various agencies around a warehouse of body bags: the women from the container.
No one wants the case. Everyone assumes it’s accidental, and that the stowaway women simply suffocated when their air pipe was accidentally crushed during the journey. The investigation is without purpose; the paperwork, knee-deep. Russell inherits the case by default.
Meanwhile at Little Johnny’s, the waterfront diner that The Greek uses to conduct business, Frank Sobotka is reading the riot act to The Greek’s main lieutenant, Spiros “Vondas” Vondopoulos.
“I don’t know what the fuck you people want and don’t want. All I know is, I got a can full of young girls suffocating on my docks!”
Vondas checks him by saying, “Now you wanna know what’s in the cans?”
Vondas explains further that his driver could not take the can because someone was supposed to come off the ship first and signal that there was no customs or port authority surveillance on the can. When that didn’t happen—and The Greek doesn’t yet know why it didn’t—the driver was told to leave.
At the Jessup prison complex, Avon Barksdale learns from his sister Brianna that their New York-based Dominican connection, Roberto, was busted by the DEA. Which makes clear why the shipment that Bodie was supposed to mule from Philadelphia was missing. Until the Dominicans can be sure that their own problems don’t stem from Barksdale’s earlier arrest—and that Barksdale is not turning state’s evidence on them—they will not do business with the Baltimore organization.
Barksdale begins thinking about where to go for product to keep his operation viable, and at the same time he’s trying to keep his nephew and fellow inmate, D’Angelo—who kept his mouth shut while taking a twenty-year sentence for the family—within easy reach. The boy has been getting high in prison and doesn’t want anything to do with his uncle or his uncle’s influence. Concerned, Avon tells his sister to ensure that D’Angelo’s girlfriend, Donette, brings their son to the lockup once a week to visit his father.
On a nearby tier, heads are knocking between Wee-Bey—who copped to several life terms’ worth of murders for the Barksdale crew—and a guard named Tilghman, who is kin to one of Wee-Bey’s victims. Avon assures Wee-Bey that he will not have a problem with Tilghman for long.
Back in the homicide unit after hours, McNulty and Bunk are washing down a sweet pile of steamed crabs with cold beer, with Bunk congratulating McNulty on having dutifully checked time and tides to put the floater from the season’s first episode inside the city line—and jurisdiction—at the time of her death.
Thus she is now the problem of the city’s CID commander, Colonel William Rawls, who already hates McNulty’s guts for the Season One investigation.
