6. BAT

Bats are the only flying mammals. They can see, but echolocate to fly and feed at night, sending out shouts and listening to the returning echoes to create a sound picture of what’s around them. These shouts are inaudible to humans, but you can hear them using a bat detector, which can also help identify them.

Bats eat beetles, flies and moths, including mosquitoes and midges. Some tropical species also pollinate plants. The most likely species to visit your garden are pipistrelles, which have a fast, jerky flight when hunting insects.

Bats don’t make nests, but roost in a number of places, including trees and canal bridges. They use different roosts for different purposes, generally preferring warm roosts in summer and cold ones in winter.

HOW TO ATTRACT THEM: grow deciduous trees where insects can gather, dig a pond and grow plenty of plants for pollinators.
