“Y ou had me so scared,” Deanna said, hugging her friend with all her might. “When I asked you to be in my wedding, I had no idea it would end up like this.”

“You and me both,” Aspen said, glancing around the room. In all the chaos of arriving in the basement, Derik had slipped away. She hadn’t had a chance to thank him, or explain that her reaction earlier was because her head was foggy from getting hit hard.

“What’s wrong? Do you need something?” Clara asked, sitting on the other side of Aspen. “Whatever you need, I can get it for you. Well, if it’s in the basement that is. Everything above us is in complete shambles.”

Aspen pressed her lips together, letting her eyes fall to the floor. She wasn’t sure worrying about whatever was or wasn’t going on between her and Derik was important enough to discuss, considering they were right in the middle of a catastrophe.

“Does this have to do with Derik?” Deanna asked, her brows coming together in a furrow. “I noticed you two were spending a lot of time together over the weekend.”

“That’s because you paired us together the entire time,” Aspen accused. “Did you know about our past?”

Deanna shook her head and crossed her heart. “I had no idea. I just know both of you, and thought you would be a good match. I figured I could make the introduction, make sure you had plenty of opportunities to be around each other, and let nature take its course. I guess I wasn’t wrong in my assessment though. You two did date after all. That means there was—and if I’m not mistaken, still is—something between the two of you.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Aspen tried to convince Deanna and herself. “There was too much damage done to ever be able to fix it.”

“That’s not true. Look at this place. The resort is in complete disarray, like so many places are after a major storm hits. But guess what, they’re going to rebuild, and when they do, they will be stronger than ever. You and Derik can do the same thing,” Clara cheered. “Don’t give up on him if you think you guys could have a second chance.”

Aspen realized she was being stubborn, mostly because she was afraid of getting hurt again. What she needed to remind herself of was that Derik really seemed to have changed since last they talked. He wasn’t the same man who broke her heart two years ago. Even the way he put her first this whole weekend proved that he had turned over a new leaf. She would be a fool to walk away and not see if they could have a future together now that they had both figured out what they wanted.

“Clara, do you mind getting Derik for me?”

“You’ve got it.” Her friend jumped up and rushed through the crowd.

A few minutes later, Derik appeared by her side. “Clara said you wanted to speak with me.”

“I think I’ll leave you two alone,” Deanna said, squeezing her friend’s hand before standing up and moving over by Ted.
