âY ou had me so scared,â Deanna said, hugging her friend with all her might. âWhen I asked you to be in my wedding, I had no idea it would end up like this.â
âYou and me both,â Aspen said, glancing around the room. In all the chaos of arriving in the basement, Derik had slipped away. She hadnât had a chance to thank him, or explain that her reaction earlier was because her head was foggy from getting hit hard.
âWhatâs wrong? Do you need something?â Clara asked, sitting on the other side of Aspen. âWhatever you need, I can get it for you. Well, if itâs in the basement that is. Everything above us is in complete shambles.â
Aspen pressed her lips together, letting her eyes fall to the floor. She wasnât sure worrying about whatever was or wasnât going on between her and Derik was important enough to discuss, considering they were right in the middle of a catastrophe.
âDoes this have to do with Derik?â Deanna asked, her brows coming together in a furrow. âI noticed you two were spending a lot of time together over the weekend.â
âThatâs because you paired us together the entire time,â Aspen accused. âDid you know about our past?â
Deanna shook her head and crossed her heart. âI had no idea. I just know both of you, and thought you would be a good match. I figured I could make the introduction, make sure you had plenty of opportunities to be around each other, and let nature take its course. I guess I wasnât wrong in my assessment though. You two did date after all. That means there wasâand if Iâm not mistaken, still isâsomething between the two of you.â
âIt doesnât matter,â Aspen tried to convince Deanna and herself. âThere was too much damage done to ever be able to fix it.â
âThatâs not true. Look at this place. The resort is in complete disarray, like so many places are after a major storm hits. But guess what, theyâre going to rebuild, and when they do, they will be stronger than ever. You and Derik can do the same thing,â Clara cheered. âDonât give up on him if you think you guys could have a second chance.â
Aspen realized she was being stubborn, mostly because she was afraid of getting hurt again. What she needed to remind herself of was that Derik really seemed to have changed since last they talked. He wasnât the same man who broke her heart two years ago. Even the way he put her first this whole weekend proved that he had turned over a new leaf. She would be a fool to walk away and not see if they could have a future together now that they had both figured out what they wanted.
âClara, do you mind getting Derik for me?â
âYouâve got it.â Her friend jumped up and rushed through the crowd.
A few minutes later, Derik appeared by her side. âClara said you wanted to speak with me.â
âI think Iâll leave you two alone,â Deanna said, squeezing her friendâs hand before standing up and moving over by Ted.
