Backstrap-Woven Scarf, Take Two

Woven with Swans Island fingering weight Merino/alpaca yarn, this scarf is luxuriously soft. I used a 12-dent rigid-heddle reed. The finer yarn made it a bit more difficult to maintain an even weave and straight selvages, but it was worth it. Although I enjoy weaving on my floor loom, it fascinates me that I can achieve fabric like this using simple backstrap equipment.

14.Repeat step 13 with two more strips. If the warp still looks uneven, continue to throw in fabric strips until all the threads are evenly spaced. You may need to adjust the tension by tightening or loosening a bundle of warp ends. Now is the time to do it — weaving with uneven warp tension causes problems you may not be able to correct once you’ve started weaving.

15.Start at the right-hand edge of the weaving and leave a tail about five times the width of the scarf for hemstitching. Using the main color, weave for about 2", and then set aside the shuttle while you hemstitch along the beginning of your weaving. Thread the tapestry needle with the weft tail. Hemstitch over two threads as shown at right: Insert the needle from front to back, two weft threads above the fabric edge, and go under two warp threads, taking the needle on a diagonal from the upper right to the lower left (a).

Take the needle under the two warp threads to the right and through the loop of the working yarn (b). Pull firmly to snug the yarn against the edge, ready to insert the needle again two wefts above the fabric edge and directly between the warp you have just wrapped and the one on its left (c). Repeat a, b, and c across the edge.

Leave a 6" tail of the hemstitching yarn at the left-hand edge of the scarf; when the scarf is finished, you can include this tail in the fringe.
