I wish I could say what happened that week, but I was in and out of it so often that I honestly couldn’t remember much.

I passed out a few more times. I slept a lot. I missed a lot of class.

By the end of the week, I was feeling better and more like myself again, but it was kinda scary to think about all the stuff I’d spaced out on. I’d literally been walking around like a zombie all week. My clearest memory went back to the day of the soccer game before it blanked out.

Playing soccer with everyone had been so much fun. I really missed doing stuff like that. I wanted to be active again. But the whole reason I’d sat out in the first place was because I worried something bad could happen. It should’ve been fine for me to play, but I pushed myself too hard, and I embarrassed myself, again.

I didn’t want to be Superman. I just wanted to do the same stuff everyone else could.

But something else worried me. Last semester, I would’ve been able to play a game of soccer just fine. After all, the tournament was ten times worse than that, and I’d gotten along mostly okay until the end.

I knew what it meant. I was getting worse.

The first week of March I got another letter delivered by Baxtor from Perot. I headed down to his office hoping he’d have something other than disappointment to offer me this time.

Perot seemed somber. “Sit down, Liam.”

I did as he said, and he immediately launched into business without messing around, which I liked. “As far as the data shows, you’re in the clear to begin using magic. It seems that your element has a different effect on you than what I thought.”

“So I can use my element again?” I said. Not that I’d been following the rules much— I’d been cheating the past week or so.

Perot nodded. “Yes. But be aware it’s more or less poisoning yourself. Your magic is hurting you, but it’s clear that not using it harms you more severely in the short term. It’s a case of you having to use the very thing that’s killing you slowly, to keep yourself alive.”

“That’s typical.” I crossed my arms. “So if I can’t stop using the thing that’s killing me, how do we get closer to figuring out how to offset the symptoms?”

I didn’t want to say find a cure. I wasn’t that optimistic.

“We need to find a way to replace the magic that’s being drained,” Perot says. “Though I’m not sure that’s possible. You can’t exactly transfuse magic. It’s not something that’s transferable.” Perot rubbed his face. “Not since the days of Anichi, anyway.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“That’s how they used to heal. Anichi transferred their powers into the bodies of their patients, and the patient’s own systems would be bolstered by the magic, using the Spirit element to heal itself.” He shook his head. “That’s impossible for anyone that isn’t from the Soul House.
