746 Days since the Outbreak

19:15 Hours

“Absolutely amazing,” Daria said, peering into her microscope at a drop of Grey’s blood that she’d combined with a drop of zombie blood she’d stored from previous experiments.

“Why thank you,” Grey said, his voice coming from the doorway. “I try to keep in shape.”

Daria’s head shot up from her equipment to find Grey wearing little more than an amused smile on his face. Amazing was right. He had on a pair of her coworker’s jogging shorts and nothing else. His hair was damp and his arm rebandaged. Had he taken a shower already?

She glanced at her watch and realized it had been more than two hours since she started analyzing her samples. She had lost herself in her work once again. Daria smiled sheepishly. “You’ve done an excellent job at that. But I was actually talking about your blood.”

“That’s a first.” Grey walked through the lab to where she was standing. “What’s the news?”

“First, you do have an immunity to the virus. I added a drop of contaminated blood to yours, and your white cells, to put it bluntly, went all kung fu on its ass. The virus didn’t stand a chance.”

“That’s good, right?”

“It is for you. I’m fairly certain with levels of antibodies this concentrated you can’t succumb to the virus, even if you were directly bitten by someone who had the full-blown infection.”

“Any idea on why that would cause the strange side effects?”

“My professional guess would be that it’s a result of the high levels of both antibodies and dead virus in your system. They’re much, much higher than is typically needed to fight off an infection. The cells aren’t harmful to you or anyone else, but I believe it could account for your zombie-like symptoms. It’s almost as though your body started to succumb to it. Your eyes changed, some of your nervous system started to deteriorate, but then it stopped. Your body fought back and killed the virus but couldn’t undo the damage you’d already suffered.”

Grey sat down in the chair beside her. Daria was suddenly aware of the scent of his warm skin and soap. It sent a shiver down her spine. Every nerve in her body was aware of just how close he was to her.

No, he didn’t smell like a rotting corpse. At. All.

“You said the cells weren’t harmful to anyone else. Does that mean I’m not contagious?”

Sharing this news gave Daria her first real reason to smile in a very long time. “There was no evidence of the live virus in any of the samples I took. Your souped-up immune system simply wouldn’t allow it to survive. The dead cells pose no risk. In fact, exposure to them would only help that person build up their own immune response.”

“Let me get this straight. You’re saying that not only am I not contagious, but that the more you’re exposed to me, the safer you’ll be?”

“In a way, yes. I test—”

Daria’s words were smothered by Grey’s mouth colliding with hers.
